The Seven international research and practice conference

Dear colleagues!

Due to the coronavirus  pandemic, our seventh International Scientific and Practical Conference "Vajrayana Buddhism in Russia: Lessons of the 20th Century and the Future Perspectives" is rescheduled for autumn 2021.

We took this decision in view of the present situation in Russia and the whole world.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES:

  • carrying out interdisciplinary scientific exchange;
  • researching Vajrayana Buddhism and its interaction with other Buddhist traditions;
  • further development of comparative and cross-cultural Buddhist studies;
  • providing international forum and support for Vajrayana researchers and practitioners.

TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED:

  • Buddhism in the modern global world.
  • Topical issues of Buddhism and Buddhist studies.
  • Buddhist traditions and innovations in Russia.
  • Buddhism in the context of social and cultural practices .
  • Buddhism in the light of contemporary scientific knowledge.
  • Forms of reception and acculturation of Buddhism.
  • Buddhism in Russian philosophy, literature, and art.
  • Experience of researching, preserving, and exhibiting Buddhist archives and collections.
  • Vajrayana methods in the development of human intellectual and creative abilities .

The conference will include a panel discussion on the following topic: “Tibetan Buddhism in Russia: Lessons of the 20th Century and Challenges of the 21st Century.” Chairman: DSc in History, Leading Research Associate at Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Surun-Khanda Dashinimayevna Syrtypova (Moscow).

      2. TOPIC OF THE PAPER.
      3. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, express your need of:
        • accommodation during the conference;
        • payment for lunch, 600–700 Rubles each (in addition to free coffee breaks);
        • an official invitation from the Organising Committee;
        • special equipment for demonstrational purposes;

As our custom has it, the results of the conference will be published as a volume of conference proceedings.

Sending your papers to the Organising Committee, you are kindly asked to observe the following formatting requirements to facilitate further work of editors, proofreaders, and reviewers as well as publication of texts in the e-library.

  1. TEXT (ready for publication in conference proceedings) must be presented in Word format for Windows::
    • Times New Roman font,
    • size 14,
    • line spacing 1.5,
    • margins 2.5 cm,
    • content 15,000–20,000 symbols.
    1. Before the heading, please, specify the author’s full name in the right upper corner. Then, in a new paragraph, write the degree and position followed by the dash symbol and author’s place of work and the city in parentheses.
      For example:
      John Smith
      PhD in Philology, Associate Prof. at Department of Philology — London University (London)
    2. The title should be in the centre of the next line.
      For example:
      Wish Fulfilling Jewel of the True Teaching
    3. Then put an abstract containing 500 symbols or less, in English and Russian.
    4. It is followed by the list of the key words — 7–10 words and phrases.
    5. It is followed by the main body of the paper.
      1. Semantic clarifications are given in parentheses within the body of the text.
        For example:
        “Truth State (Sanskrit: Dharmakaya)”
        It’s important to consider that it makes sense to highlight a Tibetan or other term (especially written using Latin script) in Italic ONLY in its first reference when the term “is being introduced”, for example:
        “When we mention this type of meditation (Tib. shine)… thus said, shine is traditionally practiced…”
      2. References cited in the paper are given in square brackets. They should contain the surname of the author of the quoted work, year of its publication, and page number, all of these separated by commas. For example:
        [Smith, 2005, 214].
        If the book mentioned in the List of References has no author specified, use the most abbreviated name of the source still enough for understanding; for example, the book published in 2020 and titled “Vajrayana Buddhism in Russia: History and Social Analysis” should be specified as follows:
        [Vajrayana Buddhism, 2020].
        If one author has several papers published in the same year, they should be given in the List of References in the alphabetical order in the following way:
        [Johnson, 2015a], [Johnson, 2015b].
      3. References to sources that are given in footnotes (in the bottom of the page), as well as page numeration and other headers and footers, should not be used.
    6. List of References
      1. The alphabetical and numerated List of References is placed at the end of the text.
      2. Publications in Russian should be mentioned first, then one should specify publications in other languages that use the Latin script, followed by publications in languages that use other scripts.
      3. In case of a research paper, it is allowed to give a separate list of sources to distinguish between the works that were analysed and scientific publications that were used to prepare the paper.

INFORMATION FOR THE PARTICIPANTS:

The registration fee for all conference participants is 1,000 Rubles (upon sending your application and paper, you will be notified about the bank details and terms of payment).

Travel expenses must be reimbursed by the delegating organisation.

The conference programme will include talks of participants who will be present in person. Distant participants will be included in the list of the conference participants only for compelling reasons in exceptional case and under the condition of paying the registration fee.

The time limit: 15 minutes, including 5 minutes of possible questions and answers.

After the conference, a collective scientific monograph will be published. The Organising Committee reserves the right to choose materials for the publication.
